The Cloud
Mrs. Gloria Dixon (Mae Melvin) named her daughter (Jean Sothern) Gloria, and the confusion that this creates forms the basis for this drama. While Gloria is away at school, her mother becomes engaged to Aaron Lathrop (Franklyn Hanna). When she receives word that an auto accident has killed mother Gloria and seriously injured Lathrop, she returns home and nurses Lathrop. He dies and Gloria discovers that she has been willed his fortune, leaving his reprobate nephew, Burton (Arthur Housman), with nothing. Understandably, Burton is not thrilled with this situation, and when he discovers a stack of intimate love letters signed “Gloria D.,” he infers that either mother or daughter was having a torrid affair with his uncle at the time of his death. Gloria gives up the inheritance to get her hands on the letters. But eventually Burton reveals that he has proof that Mrs. Dixon and Lathrop had married, thus clearing Gloria — and her mother’s — name for good.
