Steeped in a combined sense of nostalgic whimsy and melancholy, Yasuda Jun’ichi’s A Samurai in Time serves up a comedic fish-out-of-water tale of an Edo-period warrior magically transplanted to the present day and the challenges he faces as he tries to adapt to a world that becomes less familiar with every passing moment. It’s a dark and stormy night when Shinzaemon Kosaka (Yamaguchi Makiya) and Kazami Kyoichiro (Fuke Norimasa) face off on the mean streets of medieval Kyoto. Shinzaemon is a pro-shogunate samurai determined to vanquish his political rival, but just as their swords begin to clash, a burst of lightning strikes and he is knocked out. When he awakens moments later, he’s still on the Kyoto streets, but something is different. He now finds…

One of India’s most hotly anticipated action films of 2024 dropped its trailer today and it looks amazing. Kanguva, headlined by Suriya and directed by Siva, has been percolating for over a year with the production team dropping numerous tantalizing tidbits via social media. With this new full trailer we get a longer look at the action and period setting, though the makers have confirmed that the film takes place in two different eras, with Suriya (at least) performing in a double role. Director Siva has carved a niche for himself making big action spetacles with some of the biggest talent in the Tamil and film industry. Over the last decade he’s had his fair share of big hits, including a trio of films starring…
In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: four music videos by Mark Pellington. In the works of Mark Pellington, music video and film alike, words have all the power. Sometimes this is fairly literal as in his music video for U2’s One (below). It mostly focusses on imagery of buffalo and flowers, and the word one in different typefaces and languages. We are one, but words divide us? Or are we one and do words connect us? The same dichotomy between words being a force for good or evil is seen in his breakthrough films, Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophecies. Both films have scenes in which characters wholly misinterpret the meaning of…
After a vicious assault at a party, a young woman flees the scene. And as she walks back home on a gloomy and threatening Paris night, she can’t shake the feeling that she’s being followed. As she gets closer to her residence, the presence becomes more and more bold and aggressive. And it is only by confronting her deepest inner fears that she will be able to survive the ominous threat. A first look teaser and poster have been released for Gabriel Carrer’s latest horror flick, Death Cycle. After the death of her sister, a woman is visited by a man looking to solve a series of murders by a motorcycle riding maniac. As their shared fear escalates, the killer’s rampage continues in the city, leaving them both questioning who the real monster is. The latest from the director of The Demolisher and For The Sake of Vicious, Death Cycle is being touted as a revenge slasher flick with giallo film sensibilities. The promise of ultra violence also lingers in the mix as Carrer’s movies tend to be pretty gnarly. Filming is all but wrapped up and it is now headed into post. Carrer…
If there is anything in the SWU that is meant for you and your kids to watch together Star Wars Skeleton Crew has to be it. That’s it. Move over childless adult Star Wars nerds who ruin everything, this live-action series looks like it is tailored specifically for families. Disney and Lucasfilm launched the first trailer for the upcoming series, Skeleton Crew, at D23 this weekend. It will premiere on Disney+ on December 3rd with a two-episode premiere. Transparently Amblin-esque in it’s execution, down to the play of light around the kids’ discovery of the spaceship, Onyx Cinder, that will wisk them off-planet, we’re due for a good old fashioned children in peril series – The Goonies in Space if you will. We see all…
Fantasia 2024 Review: SHELBY OAKS, A Rock Solid Fright Film From First Time Director Chris Stuckmann
Twelve years ago, YouTuber Riley Brennan went missing. When, after a long dry spell, a seemingly related tragedy lands on the doorstep of her sister Mia, the rescue mission restarts in debutante director Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby Oaks. Chris Stuckmann is one of the biggest names in the emerging landscape of video-based film criticism that has exploded over the last five or so years. Many of these film commentators are content to exist in the reaction/analysis space, but Stuckmann has made it clear that his dream is creation, and that dream comes to fruition with his first feature, Shelby Oaks. Produced by the veteran indie champions at Paper Street Pictures (The Artifice Girl, Scare Package, Trim Season), Shelby Oaks is an ambitious film whose reach occasionally…
