THE KILLER’S GAME: Official Poster Revealed

My interest in action comedy The Killer’s Game was piqued for a couple of reasons. Dave Bautista is arguably one of the most entertaining wrestlers who pivoted into acting and it was directed by stunt professional turned director, JJ Perry, whose work on their debut Day Shift was really good.   Bet you thought I was going to mention Sofia Boutella, because Sofia Boutella. Oh wait- damnit!    In the new action-comedy THE KILLER’S GAME, when top hitman Joe Flood (Dave Bautista) is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he decides to take matters into his own hands – by taking a hit out on himself. But when the very hitmen he hired also target his ex-girlfriend (Sofia Boutella), he must fend off an army of…

ARROW Player in August: Selects by Hendrix, van den Houten’s OFFSPRING 4K, And More…

Next month’s lineup of programming on Arrow Video’s ARROW Player has been announced and as always there are a lot of gems coming in August.    First, we have two Selects programs coming up from one of my favorite authors, Grady Hendrix, someone I can always turn to for book referals about specific subgenres in horror literature. Andrew van den Houten, filmmaker and producer, also offers up some prime choices as well.    While we’re on the topic of van den Houten, there 2009 film Offspring, based on Jack Ketchum’s book by the same name, has gotten the 4K treatment and will be on the streaming platform at the end of the month.    There are a lot of goodies, old and new, to be…

21 films were selected for the 2024 Venice Film Festival competition and in the pack we find some surprises and several shoe-ins for the 81st edition (August 28th until September 7th). We will of course be there for wall-to-wall coverage. The big surprise title among the pack of the seven English language film has to be Dutch filmmaker Halina Reijn‘s third feature film Babygirl — an A24 project starring Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde and Jean Reno and was shot this past December. The Bodies Bodies Bodies helmer looks at power dynamics and sexuality in the workplace.… Read the rest

Fantasia Review: The Count of Monte Cristo is a Silly Yet Mostly Good Time

While watching the latest take on Alexandre Dumas’ literary classic, this time by directors Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte (who just adapted Dumas’ The Three Musketeers in 2023), I wondered if I was enjoying myself for the wrong reasons. With a high budget (making it the most-expensive French film of 2024), a starry […]

2024 Venice: Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Fabrice du Welz, Asif Kapadia, Errol Morris & Harmony Korine Out of Comp

2024 Venice: Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Fabrice du Welz, Asif Kapadia, Errol Morris & Harmony Korine Out of Comp

While we might still be on the fence about what is being described as a first-person shooter-type experience in Harmony Korine‘s Baby Invasion, but the Venice Film Festival’s Out of Competition section lineup could be just as daring as the films selected for the competition. We have established filmmakers giving another go at it from Pupi Avati‘s gothic-friendly L’Orto Americano to Claude Lelouch‘s latest feature which caps off a trilogy in Finalement, and then we have a burst of Asian cinema auteurs from Kurosawa Kiyoshi in Cloud to a just over one hour narrative from Takeshi Kitano in Broken Rage to Lav Diaz once again testing our patience with the over four hour journey in Phantosmia.… Read the rest
